SBC 411: SPAR Needs Volunteers, Vivian Celebrates MLK, BTW Looking For Alums

SPAR searching for volunteers


Shreveport Public Assembly and Recreation is seeking volunteers for its community programs.

Volunteers are needed for the after-school, senior, therapeutic recreation and special events programs. SPAR volunteers must be at least 18 years old and agree to a criminal background check.

"Volunteers make a difference in their community and the lives of the people they serve," a news release states. "There are both tangible and intangible rewards for volunteers who give of their time and energy."

SPAR volunteers will be recognized during an annual luncheon April 29th at A.B. Palmer Park.

The news release also states Louisiana House Bill No. 949 provides up to a $500 tax deduction for people who volunteer for a recreation department.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration Set In Vivian


North Caddo Parish African American Heritage Association will have its 3rd annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration on Jan. 19th at the Vivian Middle School auditorium. The event is at 6 p.m.

The association is also seeking nominees for the community to receive the 2007 Unity Award, which is given to four residents who have:


  • Served as a volunteer in the community

  • Worked to bridge the gap in community relations in north Caddo Parish or other areas,
    been instrumental in bringing services to the community,

  • Demonstrated "a heart of inclusiveness as they have carried out their mandate of service," exemplary character,

  • Grown up in north Caddo Parish, and work or serve citizens in Caddo Parish.
