EVENT ALERTS: Ladies Appreciation, Praise & Worship + Holiday Weekend Previews

Besides the usual suspects (listed to the right) there's another event happening this week ... VIP has moved their party to Club Tiffany's (formerly Game Time, and The Stock Exchange) on Hollywood Ave. (only temporarily).

They'll be hosting a Ladies Appreciation Night, Friday June 27th ... Ladies can enjoy $2 drink specials all night ... So go out and get appreciated! (LOL) ....

If clubbing is not your thing, I did find this event ...

The 2nd Annual Praise & Worship Conference hosted by Higher Dimension of Worship Ministries.

The event runs from Thursday (6/26) to Saturday (6/28) and will be held at the Philadelphia Full Gospel Baptist Church, located at 5550 Hearne Avenue in Shreveport.

Service hours are as follows:

  • Thursday - 7 p.m.
  • Friday - 12 p.m. & 7 pm
  • Saturday - 12 p.m.

So go and get ya praise on!

FLASHING FORWARD ....

The Fourth of July Weekend (which is next weekend) seems like it's going to be jam-packed.

For those of you not going to the Essence Music Festival, there will be enough to entertain you here in the SBC ...

  • Webbie and Slim Thug are performing here in town, Thursday - July 3rd
  • Pretty Willie is supposed to be doing a show during the weekend
  • DL Hughley will be at the Funny Bone that weekend as well ...
  • and the Full Moon is expected to be back up and running by next week, so clubbers can enjoy some drinks and music at ALL the local clubs.

I'll have more information next time and I'm sure there will be more added to this list in the coming days, so stay tuned ...

H.C. and R.L. are both North Louisiana natives (Chris from Shreveport and Ray from Monroe), so this should be sort of a Homecoming for them.

The show starts at 7 pm and you have to go through a different gate to see the big show, so make sure you're in the right place before you dish out some cash. Admission is only $10.

FOR THE PARTY PEOPLE:

Friday, after you let the good times roll at Festival Plaza, you can join two groups for a little party pleasure:

The Marche' Group is hosting "A Night To Remember" at GiGi's as a Festival afterparty. (Expect admission to be a little higher than normal .... I'm just sayin').

And two Kappa Chapters are banding together to give the ladies a "night to remember" (lol).

Join them at the Kappas & Kream party Friday night at the Municipal Auditorium. There's a Greek discount all night and VIP Ent. will be in the house taking photos (I'm scared to think what they'll capture on film) ...

Dress to Impress and wear something you don't mind getting "dirty" (lol).

ENJOY YOUR WEEKEND PEOPLE ... AND BE SAFE! - m

OUT ON DVD: Welcome Home Roscoe Jenkins

Another movie made in the SBC is now out on DVD. So get your copy immediately (and NOT on bootleg!!!!) or rent it and check out the DVD extras ...

Welcome Home Roscoe Jenkins was filmed right here in Shreveport/Bossier (and in Minden) and I had the pleasure of being on the crew (shout out to all the TBM crew! lol) ....
The set was amazing, the people were cool and the cast (most of them anyway) were professional and great to be around.

Martin Lawrence, Joy Bryant, Cedric the Entertainer, Mike Epps, Michael Clarke Duncan, Margaret Avery, James Earl Jones, Nicole Ari Parker, Mo'Nique
-- It was a laugh-fest every day.

And Malcolm D. Lee (like his cousin Spike) is a great director. He also directed and wrote The Best Man.

Jenkins
was his second time with a writer/director title but he also directed Undercover Brother and Roll Bounce.

The film itself is set in the South. Dry Springs, Georgia to be exact.

(Yes Shreveport can double as GA, L.A. and whatever else these movie people want! lol)

Martin's character RJ Stevens/Roscoe Jenkins is a big-time talk show host in L.A., engaged to Survivor winner "Bianca" (Joy Bryant).

RJ/Roscoe
comes home for his parents' 50th Anniversary and reunites with his country roots and his first love, Lucinda (Nicole Ari Parker).

The entire weekends reignites old flames, old rivalries and spawns two-hours full of laughs.

Though a lot of what I saw on-set was cut from the movie, a lot of the ad libs were added to the movie (mostly everything Mike Epps said was not in the original script).

The movie is rated PG-13 but I must say it probably should have been R.

There's quite a bit of gratuitous cursing in the movie and though most of it is funny as hell, it walks the line at being stereotypical of Black families.

But all-in-all, it ends with a great message and is truly a movie about family and remembering where you came from.

So pick it up!!!! Today!!!!

And for those of you who know me and know my government name, look for ya girl in the credits :)

Event Alerts: Poetic Thursday & Sassy Saturday

Most people first met me when I started e-mailing weekly events to everyone. (To get on my list ... e-mail shreveportevents@hotmail.com)

And I started that because people often say (including myself) that there is nothing to do in Shreveport.

So when something comes along that's different from the normal "club night" and gives those of us who don't normally go out a chance to be entertained ... I'm all over it ...

SO .. for all you creative types .. like myself ... there are actually 3 open mic/poetry nights going on here in Shreveport.

On Tuesdays, there is a Poetry night at the Full Moon Bistreaux (check the side panel for more information) ... but it should be on pause for the next couple of weeks will the club is under minor construction.

TONIGHT (and every Thursday night), Nspired Promotions is hosting their Open Mic (called Expressions After Dark) at JOSH Lounge.

I plan to attend tonight's Open Mic ... but not to perform lol ...

But for those singers, dancers, poets, etc., wanting to perform should be there by 7:30 pm.

Another Poetry Night is being hosted by one of my favorite local poets, Poetic Justice, at the H&H Lounge (on Hope Street). His event begins at 7 pm. If you can swing it, try to hit BOTH up.

FLASHING FORWARD ...

Ladies and Gents between 18 and 25, you'll get a chance to party on Saturday night ....

Party Pushaz (shout out to Stan) and VIP Entertainment will host Sassy Saturday at the Municipal Auditorium.

They are asking Ladies to pull out the Freakum Dresses and come out and enjoy the festivities. Others should Dress to Impress as well. This is for the Young & Sassy/Fly & Flashy. Doors open at 10 pm.

IN OTHER PARTY NEWS ...

For those into Salsa, there will be a Dance Show at Sandys Dance Center on Friday night.

The center is located 111 Dalton Street. (Call for info) ... Friday's event is $20 in advance, $30 at the door. The event continues Saturday night at Nicky's (Downtown) at 11 pm ($10 admission).

  • Pull out your poetry or songs and hit up the poetry nights ... OR
  • Pull out that little black dress or button down and hit up the Municipal Saturday night ... OR
  • Put on your Salsa dancing shoes and hit up the Salsa event.

Whatever you do ... Drive safe ... Drink responsibly and have a good time (and tell 'em mahogani sent you!).
