SIGN O' THE TIMES: Local TV Talent Let Go + Local Businesses Shutting Down

You've seen reports all over the news this year about people by the hundreds losing jobs at factories, retail stores and such. But who woulda thunk (yes THUNK) the same people reporting those lay-offs, would be a victim of them.

According to a story on shreveporttimes.com:

KSLA-TV 12 (a station under the Raycom Media umbrella) has laid off four full-time and two part-time employees, including three news personalities.

Weekend sports anchor Bob Griffin, meteorologist Ed Duranczyk and reporter Katrina Webber are no longer with the station.

KSLA General Manager James Smith said the layoffs were part of a companywide initiative. KSLA is owned by Raycom Media.

"We still have over 90 people working here," Smith said. "Our whole goal here is to preserve jobs. The good thing about KSLA is that we are No. 1 in the market. Being No. 1 means that we can weather the storm best."

Don't bother looking at ksla.com, the story isn't there ... and Bob, Ed and Katrina's profiles are already gone.

I worked with all three of them and I'm sad about this. Especially the kind and gentle Bob Griffin (but at least he has Ivan Smith to fall back on). I hear some other employees took paycuts and demotions to save their jobs ... and others were moved to different shifts to cover the loss of staff.

Though it's not uncommon for news people to get released from contracts or their contracts aren't renewed (or they simply quit because they find something better); it IS uncommon to PUBLISH their names. None of the other people who've left (or HAD to leave) were published in the media.

In just the past couple of years KSLA lost: morning female anchors Carolyn Roy and Candace Jones, evening anchors Michelle White and Carl Pendley (both veterans in the game who got jobs in another realm of media), former Chief Meteorologist Patrick Dennis (who is now at KTAL Ch. 6), former health reporter Nordia Higgins (who is anchoring in another market now), reporter David Begnaud (who is reporting in Sacramento now), and formers reporter Sara Goeudy and Brent Forbes (both reporting elsewhere).

I'm sure I'm forgetting someone -- But all listed left the halls of KSLA for different reasons, but for Raycom to deliver this news just weeks before Christmas seems a little heartless to me. Like sacrificial lambs or something.

I hope Bob, Ed, and Katrina bounce back. They are very talented individuals.

IN OTHER NEWS:

A lof "Going Out of Business" signs are going up at Shreveport businesses and retail chains, but this one surprised me more than anything:

Yes, DEE's PHOTO SUPPLY is closing it's doors on January 3rd. I wish I could hit the lotto and buy it (or at least it's contents). As a photographer, I'm truly going to miss this place. I have a lot of Dee's supplies in my photography arsenal, including my portfolio book.

Where else can you rent a darkroom, or a professional digital camera with a light kit? Where else can you take classes on the weekend to learn how to work your brand new camera? Where else can you get high quality enlargements of your favorite old photos and KNOW they'll come out right?

Now I'll have to order supplies online ... That sucks ... *Sigh* Dee's you will be missed.

  • (Check out the story on the closing HERE.)

You've probably already seen this store clearing out its inventory:

I doin't know how many days it has left ... but according to my mom, the "going out of business" prices are far from reasonable. But as we get closer to the end of the year, expect to see prices fall NATIONWIDE in retail stores. (The end-of-the-year sales won't have ANYTHING on Christmas!)

I also saw a report that KB Toys is closing ALL its stores, after filing for Ch. 11 bankruptcy protection. I believe the one that used to be in Pierre Bossier Mall is the same one that moved to the Boardwalk. I haven't shopped at KB since South Park Mall was the place to be. So I guess maybe the sales slumps finally did them in.

This is the time be thankful for being employed. With so many people losing their sources of income and having to rearrange their lives just to make ends meet. We can only hope things will get better.

*** Peace and blessings! - m
