SBC 411: Text Message Scam Alert + Tips for Shopping Safety & Recall Info

Caddo Parish Sheriff Steve Prator has issued an advisory regarding an electronic message scam.

Several callers have reported receiving text messages that informed them of 'unusual activity' on their credit or debit card. A toll free number was provided, and when the people called the number, an automated system requested their 16 digit card number.

The Caddo-Shreveport Financial Crimes Task Force warns everyone that these text messages are a type of scam known as 'Phishing'. Detectives say 'phishing' scams have been successful by e-mail and telephone for years, and now criminal seem to have moved on to text messaging.

Authorities warn to never release personal information over any type of communication device, unless you initiate the communication.

I received one of these messages telling me there was a problem with my Barksdale Federal Credit Union account. They MIGHT have gotten me to call if there wasn't one problem -- I don't HAVE a BFCU account. Dummies!!!

I've seen this kind of scam on that Discovery Channel show that shows how con artists take you for your money. They make up a fake voicemail and that automated message records your number and the scam artists take you for everything you have.

Remember, your bank will NEVER ask you to enter a password through text message or e-mail. If there is a problem with your account you will receive a LETTER with the bank letterhead and will be directed to a customer service agent that will assist you with questions.

Don't fall for it people!

As Christmas draws nearer, last-minute shoppers will be flocking to stores in the next week and a half. Which means those trying to take advantage of patrons will be stepping up their efforts too. To avoid become a victim of crime this holiday season, the Caddo Sheriff's Office and the Bossier City Police Department offer these tips:

  • Park in well-lighted areas.
  • Shop in pairs or with a group and do not walk to or from your vehicle alone.
  • Don't hesitate to ask mall or store security personnel to escort you to your vehicle.
  • Pay close attention to your surroundings.
  • Keep your cell phone with you so you can call for help, but don't talk on the phone while walking to and from your vehicle.
  • Don't leave valuables in your vehicle.
  • Report people you believe may be casing parking lots or stores.
  • Make a police report if you've been a crime victim.
  • Be a good witness by collecting information on suspects and their vehicles.

If you'll be out and about at the stores and malls, make use of these helpful tips ... WATCH YOUR BACK!!

Another safety precaution you should take during the gift-giving season is keeping up with recall information.

Some products being sold -- like toys, electronics, and clothing -- are found to be faulty, and sometimes dangerous. This could pose a problem on Christmas Day that you don't want to have to deal with ... Emergency room trips are NO FUN. Especially on a holiday.

So make yourself aware and check to see if what you're putting under the tree is on any of the consumer recall lists:

HAVE A HAPPY AND SAFE HOLIDAY SEASON!!!
