EXCLUSIVE: Local Man Wearing Obama Shirt Beaten By Group of White Men

As a journalist, I've had to report a lot of crime ... a lot of vicious, disgusting and sometimes senseless things done to people for no reason ... But it's harder when you have to report something that happens to someone you know.

This is my friend Kaylon Johnson:

And the injuries showing in this picture are the result of an assault on Kaylon by three White men early Sunday morning ... all because he was wearing an Obama shirt.

The police report is still being "worked on" ... partly because this is a crime -- a HATE crime -- and detectives will need a proper investigation, and they don't work till MONDAY ... but I also think it's taking longer than usual because once this report is open for media eyes, there will be hell to pay.

Here's the information I received from Kaylon's family:

Kaylon was on his way home around 11 p.m. Saturday night (12/6). He was returning from a trip to the Natchitoches Christmas Festival where he was selling items from his newly opened Obama Shop.

Kaylon stopped at the Citgo station off I-20 and W. Bert Kouns (near Greenwood) to fuel up. A witness says the truck drove then came to a stop. The occupants of the truck were White men who shouted at Kaylon "F*** Obama" after noticing his Obama shirt.

The men got out of the truck, approached Kaylon and proceeded to attack him ... breaking his nose and seriously injuring his eye. Kaylon will have to have surgery later this week as a result of these injuries.

No other description is given other than they were "large" White men. The clerk in the station apparently was able to get the truck's license plate number.

Kaylon was not only assaulted, he was robbed as well. The suspects took his wallet before they fled.

It appears that because this happened late at night, there was no one around to help Kaylon.

Family members believe the men may have been watching him and took advantage of the fact that he was alone to attack him (cowards!) ...

When I received a text from Kaylon the next day (Sunday) saying he'd been attacked, I almost didn't believe him. I've known him for years now and he's not the type to provoke any kind of attack, much less one this vicious and hateful.

Kaylon was a key coordinator in the Shreveport for Obama campaign. His tireless efforts helped Caddo Parish go BLUE. He was probably wearing one of the t-shirts he was selling when he was attacked.

It sickens me that some "rednecks" decided to take their HATE out on someone like him. He didn't deserve it (NO ONE DOES)... and I hope they are caught and punished to the full extent of the law for this disgusting act ...

It is 2008 people, seriously??? All this over a shirt??? Over a man of color becoming President?

Bigots call Blacks savage beasts but these men became violent for what??? What did he do to them?

I'll keep you updated on this developing story. Keep Kaylon in your prayers please

Please give him my love and support. I fight every day against this type of hate and intolerance. I am a middle-aged white female originally from Houston, who now lives in Colorado, but I give money every month to the Southern Poverty Law Center, and I do all I can every day to turn this type of ignorance around by speaking out. I just pray that the perpetrators get what's coming to them. No one should get away with this. We live in the 21st century and these types of people need to get with the program and educate themselves instead of continuing to live under rocks and stay ignorant. The part of the country where this happened is unfortunately filled with these types of people who hide out in the deep woods. They need to come out of the woods, face the light of day, and get some enlightenment! I will pray for a quick recovery and send thoughts of love to your friend!
