EVENT ALERTs: High School Open House, African-American History Parade + Poetry Workshops




Haughton High will host a spring term "Open House" from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, February 5th.

Parents and guardians are invited to meet in the boys' gymnasium for the opening program, which will feature the school band and choir.

Parents are invited to meet teachers and visit classrooms at 6 p.m. A reception will be held from 7 to 7:30 p.m. in the school library.

The 21st annual African-American History Parade Celebration will be held on Saturday, February 7th.

Line-up is at 8:30 a.m. Parade starts at 11 a.m.. The grandstand will be in front of the Court House on Texas Street.

This year's theme is "The Quest For Black Citizenship in the Americas". The parade will be covered live on KPXJ-CW21.

Following the parade there will be a Battle of the Bands and a talent show at the Municipal Auditorium, 705 Elvis Presley Avenue, Shreveport.

Professional storyteller and spoken work artist Joanna Ballard will conduct Performance/Poetry workshop (featuring Love Poems) at the Multicultural Center of the South this Saturday, February 7th and next Saturday, February 14th. The workshops begin at 12:30 pm.

The workshops will cover stage presence, body language, and projection along with other aspects of public live performance. The workshop on Feb. 14which will be followed by a Performance Love Poetry Showcase at 1:30 p.m.

All attending should come prepared with a love poem, no longer than five minutes and appropriate for all ages.

Admission: $10, adults; $8, seniors and children age 11 and younger; $18, family rate per workshop; $4, Performance Love Poetry Showcase.
