SBC 411: School Spirit Goes Commercial + Byrd Hosts 8th Grade Open House

School Spirit has gone commercial! Lots of retailers in the SBC now have shelves and racks full of high school and middle school paraphernalia.

I found these shirts (above and below) at the Wal-Mart in Shreve City (on Shreveport-Barksdale Highway).

They had t-shirts for Southwood, Captain Shreve and Byrd high schools for just under $8 in sizes Small to Xtra Large.

This sighting was a couple of weeks ago so I don't know how many are still available, but it's a great idea for students and family members to have and support their schools!

Walgreens stores are also supplying t-shirts and other goodies for students and families to show their spirit.

These Captain Shreve tees (above) were available at the Walgreens on Youree Drive (at Southfield). I believe they were $10. There were also t-shirts for A.C. Steere Elementary (below).

At that same Walgreens on Youree, I found a shelf FULL of Youree Drive stuff -- including bears, bags, water bottles and umbrellas bearing the school's name and colors.

(I picked up a water bottles and drawstring backpack for my niece and nephew ... Go Spartans!)

This surge in School Spirit - Retail Style ... may have been sparked by CVS (though Wal-Mart used to carry stadium seats and blankets a few years back).

CVS's all over the city started carrying the same bears (shown above and below) a few years ago. I bought several in anticipation of my 10-year high school reunion.

CVS stores usually carry stuff for the school(s) nearest to that particular location. I found these bears at the one on the corner of Kings and Youree.

Now, as you can see, Walgreens is following the same pattern. For example, across the street from Byrd High (on Line Ave at Kings Hwy.) carries t-shirts, sweatshirts and more.

I mean maybe the schools aren't providing enough memorabilia to their students and now retail is making a killing off of it. Either way, it's a great idea ... so check YOUR local CVS, Walgreens or Wal-Mart and ...

SHOW YOUR SPIRIT!!!

And speaking of school spirit ....

Did you hear about the billboards Byrd High Seniors put up along Youree Drive that were taken down by Lamar Advertising because Captain Shreve students/faculty/parents complained about ads?
  • (Check the story out HERE).
Byrd and Shreve have had a rivalry for DECADES but I saw the billboards and it wasn't a snub against Shreve, the school was giving a shout-out to their Seniors and were showing their pride.

I hope they got their money back because that was just plain stupid they had to remove the ads because of "hatin'" ...

IN OTHER NEWS:

Speaking of Byrd, the Math/Science Magnet high school is holding it's 8th Grade Open House next week.
