The biopic stars Rob Brown (Finding Forrester, Coast Carter, Stop-Loss), and is based on the inspirational true story of college football hero Ernie Davis (pictured below), the first African-American to win the Heisman Trophy.
Following his draft by the NFL, tragedy struck the star athlete and he was never able to take the professional field. But his tale would forever change the face of professional sports.
Raised in poverty in the Southern Tier of New York State, Davis overcame seemingly insurmountable obstacles to become an unstoppable running back for the Syracuse Orangemen.
Under the guidance of coach Ben Schwartzwalder (played by Dennis Quaid. Refusing to play by the unspoken racist rules of the day, Davis broke through one barrier after another to alter the way fans looked at men of his color.
IN OTHER MOVIE NEWS:
Two movies made in the SBC are getting the spotlight this month ...
-- Pulse 2 was released on DVD this week. The horror sequel was filmed in Shreveport earlier this year.
-- And the biopic about Dubya, simply titled "W" (which was also filmed here in Shreveport) is finally about to hit theaters next Friday, October 17th (just a couple of weeks before the election ... hmmm, could that be considered propaganda???).
The movie, directed by Oliver Stone (JFK, Nixon, Born on the Fourth of July, Any Given Sunday) chronicles the life and presidency of George W. Bush.
What surprised me most was the choice of the VERY few Blacks in the movie. Playing Condoleeza Rice? -- Thandie Newton (Beloved, Crash), who looks NOTHING like Condi!
And Colin Powell will be played by Jeffrey A. Wright (who most know as the crazy dude who stabbed himself with an ice pick in Shaft, but has also played MLK). I don't plan to go see the movie in the theater but I'll check it out on DVD -- just cause ... lol
Check out the trailer HERE.
