SBC 411: Summer Job Program for Teens + Interesting Camps for Kids

Applications Being Accepted for Summer Job Program


The Coordinating and Development Corp. and the Seventh Planning District Consortium Workforce Investment Board will sponsor a summer youth employment program funded by The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

The program is designed to provide summer jobs to economically disadvantaged youth 14 to 24 years of age who have "barriers to employment." Jobs will be available for 107 youth who live in Caddo Parish but outside of Shreveport.


Applications are available at all Caddo Parish schools or the Caddo Parish Business and Career Solutions Center, 2900 Dowdell St.. and Shreve Memorial Library or at an Caddo Parish High School.

Police Department to Host Fishing Camp


The Shreveport Police Department is currently accepting applications for its 2009 Youth Fishing Camp.

The camp is open to youths ages 6 to 13 and is set for from 8 a.m. to noon at the Cross Lake Patrol Headquarters.

The event includes a day of food, fishing and safety education. Call the Community Orienting Police Bureau at (318) 673-6950 or (318) 673-7236.


There are a limited number of spaces still available, and applications are on a first-come, first-served basis.









Caddo Sheriff Plans Youth Firearms Education Camp


Caddo Sheriff Steve Prator will host a Youth Firearms Education Campfor children interested in target shooting and firearms safety.

Five one-day mini camps will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. June 15-19 at the Sheriff’s Regional Training Academy, 15639 Highway One South. Campers can select which day they would like to attend and join Caddo deputies on the range for supervised firearms safety education and .22 rifle shooting, according to a press release.

In addition, campers will learn rural and urban survival skills, water safety, hands-on defensive techniques to protect against stranger abduction, and more.

The camp is free and open to boys and girls, ages 10-14. Transportation is available.The deadline to register is May 29 and space is limited.

Applications can be picked up at any Caddo Sheriff’s Office Substation, Caddo Correctional Center, Sheriff’s Safety Town, the Caddo Parish Courthouse, or Government Plaza. Call (318) 698-7233 for more information

Young Poets Wanted for New Creative Arts Program


Is your child blessed with the gift of writing? Are they interested in poetry and like to perform? Then S.P.E.A.K. Entertainment wants to hear from you!

S.P.E.A.K. Entertainment is an arts organization that is looking for the future poets of America: youth between the ages of 10 and 18 to be a part of an inspiring program called P.O.P. (the Poetry Outreach Program).

The program is designed to match up local writers and poets with youth who aspire to the same greatness. Participants in the program will learn creative writing skills, be a part of writing workshops and perform their work for family, friends and other poetry lovers.
