Tourism, Black Inventors Talks Planned Tuesday

North Shreve Library's Black History Program at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday (Feb. 23rd) will feature Brandy Evans, vice president of communications for the Shreveport-Bossier Convention and Tourist Bureau.

Evans will discuss what the Shreveport-Bossier City area has to offer and the importance of tourism.

The youth ministry of Christian Faith Worship Center Church International also will do monologues that day about black inventors, including Dr. Patricia Bath, the first black woman doctor granted a patent, and Lonnie Johnson, inventor of the super soaker. Children will be dressed as their inventor.

For more information, call (318) 674-8172.

"Conversation About Race" Set for Thursday

The National Institute for Community Empowerment will host The Raw Truth: A Real Conversation About Race from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, February 25th at Centenary College.

The discussion aims to serve as a "mechanism to engage the local community in a real and substantive dialogue about the status of race relations in the Shreveport area, with the hopes of creating and implementing an action plan that will create parity for all Shreveport citizens," a news release states.

Panelists will include state Rep. Patrick Williams; Africa Gordon Price, executive editor, The Times; Lou Gehrig Burnett, political columnist and commentator; Scott Hughes, executive director, Alliance for Education; Joe Shyne, Shreveport city councilman; Cedric Choyce, president, Caddo Association of Educators; and Craig B. Lee, community advocate and candidate for Shreveport City Council's District B.

The discussion will be filmed and will air later on the local Comcast channel. For more information, call Kameko Thomas at (318) 393-6294.
